First Grade Lesson reflection
This morning was my final observed lesson for my undergraduate student teaching. Due to the fact that Monday is Earth Day, I did my science lesson on the Three R’s: reduce, reuse and recycle. The lesson was mostly a hands-on activity that involved the students coming up with their own ways to reduce, reuse or recycle various objects that I brought in from home such as; water bottles, paper bags, ziplock bags and so on. The students made this lesson such a breeze because they were able to stay focused and engaged throughout.
Since I have had so much practice teaching this class, I feel that I have improved so much that my strengths outweigh what I need to improve. The biggest strength of this lesson was definitely the objects that I brought in, not only because I am visually showing them what they can recycle or reuse, but, because the objects were all familiar to the students. Also, the idea of the students creating their own Go Green poster as our independent activity, allowed for the students to think they were just creating something fun, however they really were learning. The class remained on task throughout, which shows how my behavior management has improved since my first observed lesson. When I would ask questions that may have been a bit difficult for the students to understand, I would give small clues that lead them to the answer, without actually giving them the answer, which was good because I kept them thinking. The students became a part of the lesson, coming up with their own definitions to the three r’s and sharing their ideas of how they would recycle, reuse or reduce.
Of course, no one is perfect after only a few months of student teaching, so there are some things that I do need to work on. One thing that I noticed while I was teaching was that I have to practice writing on the board without my back turned to the class. This is such a difficult strategy to pick up; however, I have been working on it more with this class. I also need to work on my vocabulary usage with the younger grades. Sometimes I use words that might be too advanced for a first grade to understand and then I will have to think of more than one way to explain something. I should watch out for using words such as original and item, and think of simpler terms to describe something. Lastly, I need to make sure that I am clearly stating my expectations for discussion to the students, as well as what I expect from them transitioning from the rug to their seats for independent work. I am still working on my teaching strategies, however I learn from every mistake, and will continue that well into my career.

supervisors evaluation
Once again, I met with my supervisor after finishing up my observed lesson in order to receive feedback on my strengths and weaknesses.
