** The picture above was taken while I was in my fourth grade placement. The student is sawing her Dutch house using a miter box and box saw. The whole class created their own Dutch houses during our Colonial Times unit of instruction. This project incorporated not only social studies, but technology, math and language arts as well. The students wrote their historical fiction stories prior to creating their houses about characters that lived in the Colonial Times, they created blueprints of their houses by measuring the angles of the roof and measured the sides of the houses in inches, writing their final answers in fraction form. This picture goes along with my philosophy of education because this project defines hands-on, interactive learning.
