FLOOR PLAN OF MY cooperating FIRST GRADE CLASSROOM
These pictures are of two different angles of the first grade classroom I was in. In the front of the room there was the meeting area with a carpet facing a Smartboard as well as the easel, where the Do Now and Math Message would be displayed, and lastly an ottoman for the teacher, or student presenter. The 26 student desks were broken up into five separate tables, all with a different color label, where the students would work during independent and group work. The table in the back is the 'group' table. This is where we would meet for guided reading, or small group work, it is also the only teacher desk in the classroom. Separating the student table and the group table is one half of the student library. The other half separates another student table and the rug. The student library is leveled using the Fountas and Pinnell reading level system, and books are either separated by level, if a 'dot' book, or by subject, if an 'interest' book. Directly behind the group table is the class word wall, in which five words get added each week. These five words become 'star' words and the students go over them along with their words study words each week.
The two computers in the back of the room are student computers and are used during research time, for example if we are doing a science project, or during centers. In between the closets is our word study wall, which normally displays the poem of the week, poem in which all five word study words are in, as well as the five star words. When the photograph was taken these were currently not up because it was in between transitioning the word study words.
